“For several years I had the privilege of training with Spencer Lalonde. He was a great coach and training partner. Always helpful and easy to work with. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a positive martial arts training experience.”

- Joe Doerksen, UFC Veteran, one of Canada’s most experienced MMA fighters with over 50 professional wins.

Spencer Lalonde is an amazing human being and instructor. He has built from scratch one of the best academies to train at in Ontario where kids and adults of all ages and level train in a safe and friendly environment. His son Rayne, has blossomed into one of the most accomplished teens in Canada in both Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Spencer is a great instructor who has tons of knowledge from all of his years of wrestling and training BJJ, he trains under the well known Rodrigo Munduraca and has also spent lots of time training with UFC grappling phenom Demian Maia. I have personally trained with him many times and have learned much from him, in fact he inspired me and helped me build my own academy. They have kids and adult classes and many of the kids are killing it on the local tournament scene and they are super nice and respectful! If you want to train BJJ and live anywhere close to Barrie, this is the only place you should consider! Dainis Nguyen - Judo and BJJ Black Belt, Head Instructor of Team DNA BJJ

As a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, I’ve travelled and been part of many martial arts academies across the country. Submission Arts Academy has a hard working family atmosphere and a team that genuinely cares for each other. Spencer Lalonde’s martial arts knowledge, experience and skill allow people from all ages to learn at a rapid pace. He’s a compassionate leader who teaches people how to be better as an overall person. I can’t say enough about the high level of leadership and values that Professor Lalonde possesses.

Sergeant/Sergent Sean Spurvey, CD

“Great atmosphere and fantastic instructors! Jiu-Jitsu keeps me in great shape physically and mentally. If you want to stay active in a friendly environment, this is the spot. Cannot recommend it enough.”

- Angelo, Barrie City Firefighter

“I looked at a few martial arts academies in Barrie with the intention of enrolling my 7-year- old in a program and was quite discouraged with the lack of passion and joy within these environments. After exchanging a few messages with Spencer and visiting Submission Arts Academy I realized their Academy has been built on passion and joy. Extremely welcoming and friendly environment. It is clear the Sensei’s love what they are doing and are very skilled in both Jiu-Jitsu as well as teaching others. Especially the young children. My son loves the program and eagerly attends 3 days a week as well as asks if he can go on PD days. This from a child who literally fears leaving the comfort of home.”

– Kelly Madigan

Spencer Lalonde was part of my coaching staff for the majority of my high school wrestling career. His knowledge of wrestling always allowed him to help fix the finer details of my technique. He always knew when I felt something was "off" and would give direction as to what I needed to correct. Spencer would always remind me what I need to focus on from tournaments going into the week and make sure I was mentally focused leading into big competitions with simple verbal cues. Overall he's a supportive and motivating coach!

- Julie Steffler, Western Mustangs Wrestler

My 3 children have been with Submission Arts Academy for nearly 2 1/2 years now. While learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu they are also learning respect, discipline and confidence along with the ability to protect themselves. I’ve personally been involved with martial arts for over 30 years and this club is second to none. Aside from all the other great experiences my children have with this club. They are also learning from some highly experienced Jiu-Jitsu
practitioners/coaches. In their short few years with the club my children have won numerous medals and awards even at the provincial level. Professor Spencer Lalonde and the Sub Arts team is in constant pursuit to continuously improve the program and the experience for its members. This isn’t just another martial arts club. It’s a place where friends come together to learn and grow together. I highly recommend Submission Arts Academy to anyone looking for a sport or martial art to try out whether you are 6 or 60.

"Incredibly welcoming academy. From the moment you walk in you feel like you are a part of the family. The desk staff, instructors, and students will all greet you with a smile and help you every step of the way.

The instruction is top notch, whether you are a beginner or an advanced student there is something for you. Everyone is very open minded and willing to share ideas.

The academy is the cleanest facility I have been to. The mat space, change room and showers are spotless. The viewing area above the academy is a nice touch as spectators can view the class without interrupting.

If you are a new student looking for a place to train or have any experience in Jiu Jitsu I highly recommend Submission Arts Academy."

Dear Parent,

Spencer LaLonde is a BJJ instructor in Barrie ONMaybe you found our site after doing a web search on "Barrie martial arts classes for children," or perhaps you heard about us from a friend. However you discovered us, I sincerely appreciate your interest in our jiu-jitsu programs for kids.

I'm Spencer Lalonde, and I'm the co-owner and head instructor here at Submission Arts Academy in Barrie, Ontario. I'm also a proud parent of two boys who have trained in jiu-jitsu for years.

If you're like most parents we speak with, you're not sure what the difference is between Brazilian jiu-jitsu and other arts. So, allow me to share just what makes jiu-jitsu different, and why many parents say it's the best thing they've done for their kids.

Jiu-Jitsu... The Perfect Self-Defense for Kids!

childrens martial arts

So just how is Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) different than other martial arts? One significant difference that most parents notice right away is that jiu-jitsu is a "grappling" art. Meaning, jiu-jitsu techniques focus on taking an aggressor to the ground, and then stopping their attack with a pin or hold.

This may seem like an ineffective strategy to the untrained person, but it's actually incredibly effective. And, it's great self-defense training for kids. In other arts, the only options a child might have are strikes and kicks. But in jiu-jitsu, kids are trained to control an attacker and then neutralize their attack using the least amount of force necessary.

This approach works great for kids, because they don't have to hurt another kid to defend themselves. Most kids are hesitant to throw a punch, and for good reason. But with jiu-jitsu, they can defend themselves without reservation, because they know they can do so without injuring the other child.

Jiu-Jitsu Builds Fitness And Confidence...

childrens martial arts builds confidenceAnother great thing about jiu-jitsu is the physicality of it. Kids today spend more time being sedentary than any previous generation. Yet, their little bodies crave movement and activity.

In jiu-jitsu, kids spend most of their class time working with a partner, either learning movements or "rolling" with each other in real-time practice. This is great for keeping kids in shape, and for letting them blow off steam.

Plus, it builds their confidence like no other martial arts class. The reason is because jiu-jitsu involves real-time training against a resisting partner. This means that kids learn movements that really work... and they know for a fact they can defend themselves, because they prove it on the mats every day.

Let me tell you, there's nothing that builds a kid's confidence more than knowing they have nothing to fear from bullies. This allows them to have the courage to verbally de-escalate conflicts, and to allow verbal jabs and taunts to roll off them.

In short, that level of confidence makes it much easier for them to interact socially, making them less of a target for bullies, and happier overall.

And Kids Love It!

kids love jiu jitsuAnd the best thing about jiu-jitsu is that kids love it! Of course, we strive to make our classes as "kid-friendly" as possible, focusing on positive reinforcement and teaching positive character values in every lesson.

Jiu-jitsu practice looks a lot like the type of physical play that kids will engage in on their own. However, we focus that physical energy into something that is productive, that builds confidence, that makes kids safer and happier, and that will benefit your child for a lifetime.

In short, while your kid is having a blast learning jiu-jitsu, they're gaining valuable life skills that will elevate their trajectory in school and life.
